Custom Stationery Design: Why I Love Being a Stationer

August 20, 2025

Filed in: About Amanda

My dad tells a story of how he used to collect vintage stamps with his favorite grandmother as a child. Later, he went into print design. Most of what I know about being a creative, graphic design, and print comes from family members. You can say that this type of work is, quite literally, in my blood. And there’s something magical about doing work that feels so innate… so personal… right? That’s exactly how I feel about designing custom stationery.

Custom stationery has always held a quiet kind of magic for me. Long before I ever called myself a designer, I was dreaming of beautiful print, carefully choosing favorite pens, and mailing letters to childhood pen pals. I have a distinct memory of the very first time I held a vintage stamp in my hand. It was October 2020 when my sister, mom, and I were perusing an antique fair in Laguna Hills. A vendor beautifully curated mini collections of vintage stamps, and I remember being instantly drawn to them. I held each one in my hand, carefully choosing a favorite collection. At the time, stationery wasn’t on my radar. I didn’t know what I’d do with the stamps… or why I felt drawn to them. So eventually, after long consideration, I put them down and left only with a photo of them on my phone.

The photo of the stamp collection I coveted. That Audrey Hepburn stamp is something, right? You can get your hands on the stamp here or here.

Looking back, it feels inevitable that I would one day arrive here, designing stationery not just for myself, but for families, couples, and brands who value celebrating life’s moments as much as I do.

Custom Stationery Design is the Perfect Job for Me

Holiday Stationery as Part of the Celebration

Holidays have always been my happy place! I live for them! As a child, I dreamed of the day I’d have my own family to celebrate with, and now nothing brings me more joy than gathering loved ones for special occasions. But it’s more than just the celebrations. I love the curation of each season. Give me all the Americana in summer, the pumpkins and falling leaves in autumn, and every single Christmas tradition (never skipped!) in the winter. I even plan my girls’ birthday parties months in advance just for the fun of it. Designing custom stationery for holidays and life’s milestones feels like the perfect extension of that passion—a way to make those moments even more beautiful and memorable. Not only for me, but for you too. I love being even a small part of your most special celebrations

A Passion for Paper and Print

Back when I was doing brand design, print was always the part I looked forward to most. I secretly wished every client would book print collateral. And if they wanted specialty finishes? That was my dream! Over the years, I’ve designed everything from letterpress business cards to highway billboards. There’s nothing quite like seeing a design come alive in print, transformed from an idea on my screen into something people can touch, share, and enjoy.

Typography as a Creative Tool

Typography has always been at the heart of my design work. I love a good font, and curating, pairing, and refining fonts is one of my greatest strengths in graphic design. For a while, I considered diving into surface pattern design, but it felt too illustrative and I just kept coming back to stationery. Being a stationer lets me do what I love most: utilize and design with type to tell a visual story. I can’t help it! I just love when typography is center stage, and stationery let’s me play with both type and illustration in a way that works really well for my design style. Playing with letterforms, hierarchy, and layout to create something beautiful and meaningful is one of my favorite parts of the process.

Visual Storytelling Through Custom Stationery

One of my favorite parts of branding was taking a client’s “what” and “why” and translating it into visuals that felt like them. Stationery lets me do the same thing, but on an even more personal level. Every invitation, announcement, or note becomes part of someone’s story—a celebration that will be remembered long after the event itself. There’s something incredibly meaningful about creating a design that isn’t just beautiful, but that captures a moment in time and lives on in print.

Creative Work That Honors Life’s Milestones

My love for paper and meaningful words started long before I was a designer. As a child, I was a devoted pen pal. Even as an adult, I sent handwritten letters to my now-husband throughout our entire first year of dating. There’s always been something magical to me about sending and receiving something special in the mail. Now, as a mother, that feeling has only grown. I treasure every milestone and celebration with my own family, and stationery feels like a natural extension of that joy. It’s the perfect balance: work that lights up my creative side while fitting beautifully into this season of life. Designing pieces that mark life’s most meaningful chapters is deeply personal to me, and I love being a small part of that story for others too.

Designing custom stationery isn’t just a job for me, it’s truly the intersection of everything I love: celebrating life’s milestones, bringing stories to life through design, and creating something tangible that people will treasure for years. From my childhood hobbies to the joys I find in motherhood, this work feels like a natural extension of who I am. Every piece I design holds meaning, and being part of someone’s most memorable moments is a privilege I’ll never take for granted! I feel lucky to have landed in this type of work and I can’t wait to work with you on your next stationery project, whether that’s through one of my brand partnerships like Minted or as a 1:1 client of Poised Avenue.
